Lent 2021

Dear Friends of Saint Ann’s Shrine,

Here we are in January of a hopefully better new year, and so I ask: have you been immunized yet with the protective vaccine capable of saving you from COVID-19 19 and its possible serious effects on your life? If not yet…be patient, your turn will come soon! Thanks to our hard-working scientists, several vaccines have been developed and are currently being deployed throughout the U.S. to defend and protect us from this dreaded virus that has so disrupted our everyday style of living. We pray that you and your loved ones are in good health and know that we keep you in our thoughts and prayers every day!

We are reminded daily of the destructive effects of COVID-19 19 on our human life, but as compared with the even more destructive effects of serious sin on our divine life with God, it matters little.  COVID-19 19 only attacks the body…serious sin attacks the soul. Vaccines may be likened to a sort of human savior, like many medicines, surgeries, or therapies, but only the self-sacrifice of a person, Jesus Christ, on the Cross is the ultimate Savior of the World. He brings us eternal life, not merely a longer stay on earth.

This brings us to the Liturgical season of Lent which begins on February 17th. This is a forty-day period to remember our Baptism, that long ago day we were first introduced to the Triune God of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, were made sons and daughters of God’s family, were flooded with God’s Grace and given the all-important ticket to Heaven and eternal life with God after death.  We are so blessed and thankful to be members of the Catholic Church and destined to life with God forever. This blessing we wholeheartedly wish to every person.

On Ash Wednesday and throughout Lent, we are challenged to Turn Away from Sin and be Faithful to the Gospel. You may not be able to receive the
Ashes this year, but in our hearts, all of us can welcome Jesus in prayer and try to be more patient with all the personal inconveniences and hardships the recommended protocols ask us to observe. We accept these restrictions on our personal freedom to keep others around us as well as ourselves safe and healthy.

Once again, we at Saint Ann’s Shrine, ask your help to continue our mission to promote devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist, to recruit new vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life, and to maintain the health of our elderly members. Kindly assist us with whatever donation you can share during these hard times in the pandemic. We understand, and bless your generosity.

With a grateful heart,

Fr. Roger Bourgeois, SSS, Chaplain
